Things to see in Jakarta

Monas – The National Monument

Located in Merdeka Square, the 132m high National Monument is a celebration of the country’s independence and is revered across Indonesia. Taking 14 years to build and opening in 1975 under the first President of Indonesia, Sukarno; for a small admission fee visitors can get some of the best views over the city from the observation deck.

Merdeka Square also forms the cultural heart of this sprawling city and covers an area of over one kilometre square. Surrounding the square are several impressive government buildings and the National Museum of Indonesia containing an impressive collection of relics and artefacts pertaining to the history and culture of the country.

Insider’s Tip: Entry into the museum is included in the price of the monument ticket giving visitors a full day of activities in one!

Istiqlal Mosque and Jakarta Cathedral

In close proximity to Merdeka Square lies the largest mosque in Southeast Asia, Istiqlal Mosque. With a capacity of 200,000 people, a beautiful marble courtyard, and decorative minarets, the imposing building is a sight to behold. Inside the mosque, enormous columns support the central dome which was erected in 1978.

Directly opposite the Istiqlal Mosque is the 1901 Jakarta Cathedral, with the proximity showing the tolerance of the Indonesian people of all religions. Dwarfed by the neighbouring mosque, the interior is still a beautiful recreation of the Catholic cathedrals in Europe, and it remains the head of the Catholic Church in Jakarta still.

Things to Do in Jakarta

Ancol Dreamland

Get away from the bustle of the city and have a day of pure fun and frivolity! The Ancol Dreamland theme park is the perfect escape for those travelling with children, or those that are a big kid themselves.

Thousand Islands

Holidays to Jakarta do not have to be just about the city itself, as to the north are the Thousand Islands. Golden beaches on secluded islands, some with rustic resorts and restaurants, provide those looking for an escape.

Marine life abounds in the warm waters of the Java Sea making many of these islands perfect for snorkelling and diving. Pulau Pramuka in particular is a nature reserve for the greenback turtle which is protected in their natural coral reef environment.
