Things to see in Seattle

Seattle Centre

Containing many must-see items on any holiday to Seattle, The Seattle Centre was the original site for the 1962 World’s Fair. This attraction brought with it a wave of planning and construction with the iconic Seattle Space Needle still one of the most popular sights in the city.

Within the complex are many museums including the Museum of Pop Culture and the Pacific Science Museum, as well as the world renowned Chihuly Gardens and Glass where the vibrant works of art of Dale Chihuly are displayed over eight galleries.

Insider’s Tip: The Seattle CityPASS is a fantastic way to save when visiting the above attractions and many others.

Olympic Sculpture Park

Set in a 9 acre open space just north of Downtown, the Olympic Sculpture Park is a beautiful combination of art and nature. With paths meandering through the park, it is a lovely way to experience both the Seattle waterfront and the city’s investment into its art scene.

Operated by the Seattle Art Museum, they offer free 60 minute tours through the park for enthusiasts looking for a deeper understanding of the sculptures and their artists.

Things to Do in Seattle

Pike Place Market

A thriving market located on the waterfront between Downtown and the piers, this multi-story covered market offers visitors the chance to pick up everything from souvenirs and antiques to fresh food and seafood. Get there early to watch the day’s catch come in to the seafood vendors before heading across the street to the original Starbucks that opened in 1912.

Insider’s Tip: The best way to see and experience Pike Place Market is on a half day walking food tour. What could be better than eating your way through the delicacies that Seattle has to offer!

Boeing Factory

Seattle is the home to the Boeing Factory where plane aficionados will be enthralled by the complexities of building one of the most advanced pieces of machinery in the world. Take the tour through the factory and see the history of the company told through the planes it has made over the years, up to the brand new Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner.

The factory is open 7 days a week and is located 25 miles north of the city centre making an excellent and informative half day excursion.

Day Trips from Seattle

Around Seattle are some of the best natural vistas in the US. From the iconic Mt Rainier that looms over the city, to Snoqualmie Falls that carries the snow melt over a 268 foot drop, to the imposing and historic Mt St Helens to the south of the city with its visitors centre detailing the 1980 eruption.

Alternatively, take the ferry over to one of the many islands in Puget Sound for spectacular views back to the city skyline with Mt Rainier in the background. Bainbridge Island is a world away from the bustle of the city, with beautiful forests and quaint towns, and at only 35 minutes on the ferry it makes for an idyllic day trip from Seattle.

Insider’s Tip: Keep an eye on the waters of Puget Sound as whales and orcas are common in the calm depths!
