Stanley Park

The pride and joy of Vancouver’s open space is located on the peninsula out into Vancouver Harbour as it stretches towards the north shore. With over 400 hectares of West Coast rainforest with winding trails to walk, sandy beaches, a pitch-and-putt course, First Nations totem poles, and the Vancouver Aquarium, Stanley Park offers fantastic views of the city skyline and surrounding harbour from a beautifully landscaped setting.

The Gastown District

This historic neighbourhood is Vancouver’s oldest district and began life as a single tavern in 1867. Today, Gastown remains a snapshot of the early days of the city, with paved streets and Victorian architecture. But is also now home to a thriving fashion scene, galleries, and some of the best restaurants in the city.

Water Street is picturesquely lined by vintage lampposts with the famous Steam Clock and statue of the publican John “Gassy Jack” Deighton immortalised at either end. Continuing west will have you at Canada Place, a pier on the waterfront that houses Vancouver’s exhibition centre and can often be seen with cruise ships lining the sides as they set off and return from the Alaskan Inside Passage.

Insider’s Tip: Take a walking food tour of some of the city’s best culinary delights while hearing about the history and landmarks of Gastown. A great way to experience this amazing district with a local!

Capilano Suspension Bridge Park

Located just one mile to the north of the city across Lions Gate Bridge, the Capilano River cuts a deep gorge as the mountains rise up on all sides around. With a span of 450 feet and 230 feet above the rushing waters of the river, the Capilano Suspension Bridge crosses the divide into lush evergreen rainforests, while the hair-raising Cliffwalk is perfect for the adventurous as they take the trail protruding from the cliff face where in sections there is nothing but glass between them and the canyon floor far below.

Insider’s Tip: Take the free shuttle from four easily accessible locations in the city. It runs year round on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Granville Island Markets

To the south of the Downtown district, Granville Island Public Markets are a hub of activity that appeals to a wide audience with farmer’s markets selling everything from cheese to produce to chocolate, breweries, a distillery, and even Canada’s first sake maker! Open 7 days a week, it’s a fantastic place to grab an impromptu picnic before heading to Stanley Park or English Bay for the sunset. If you wish to sit and eat, the offering of seafood is particularly excellent at one of the waterfront dining options.

The Net Loft building offers First Nation artwork, B.C. wines, and other unique gifts, while located just outside the Public Market, the surrounding area contains theatres and galleries.

Insider’s Tip: The colourful mini-tugboat ferries that cross False Creek are an interesting and fun way to reach the island from the city!

The Mail Run

The absolute best way to see the stunning coastline and explore the tiny villages on secluded islands off the west coast is to join “The Mail Run”, a scenic flight that still operates as the delivery service for some of the remote communities in the Strait of Georgia. Departing from Vancouver Harbour, the flight navigates away from the city and its backdrop of snow-capped mountains and out towards the open water between the mainland and Vancouver Island.

Landing on Salt Spring Island where you can explore the quaint shops for an hour, you return to Vancouver with another pass over the beautiful landscape that will create memories to last a lifetime!

Depending on border crossing times, Seattle is a fantastic destination to explore from Vancouver at only a 2 ½ hour drive. The Space Needle and Pike Place Markets are a must in the city that is dwarfed by the silhouette of Mt Rainier.
