Things to See in Alice Springs

The Kangaroo Sanctuary

Made famous by the BBC2 series Kangaroo Dundee, The Kangaroo Sanctuary is located about 20 minutes outside of Alice Springs and offers visitors a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the cutest animals in the country.

Originally set up to look after orphaned joeys, the sanctuary is open from Tuesday to Friday for sunset tours which last approximately 2 ½ hours and include talks on the kangaroo’s eating habits, behaviour, and even a chance to hold a joey for the perfect photo opportunity!

Insider’s Tip: The sanctuary does not accept “walk-in” visitors so the only way to experience this is to book a tour.

Simpsons Gap

Experience the great outdoors and head into the MacDonnell Ranges to Simpsons Gap for a picture perfect outback setting. Located 18 km from Alice Springs, this natural pool is surrounded by red canyon walls making it a great place for a refreshing dip. A short walk along the wheelchair accessible path from the carpark, this natural landscape will leave you breathless.

Uluru & Kings Canyon

Although not part of Alice Springs, it would be a shame to come to the Red Centre and not take a tour of Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Kings Canyon. Located over 500 kms to the southwest, these two national parks are best done as part of a tour over 2-3 days. This way you can experience the majesty of sunrise and sunset over Uluru, as well as walking amongst the stark landscape of Kings Canyon.

Go Stargazing

The area around Alice Springs is some of the most uninhabited and isolated in the world. Without the light pollution of cities, and usually with very little cloud cover, this makes it the perfect place to see the countless stars in the night sky. Join a group, venture up to a hill top lookout, or dine out under them; no matter the way, you’ll be amazed at how many you can see.

Take a Hot Air Balloon Flight

Get up early and take a flight above the dessert in a hot air balloon. Watch as the landscape below changes colour before your eyes, with trees casting elongated shadows and the scarred land undulating from hills down into gorges. This is one of the best ways to see the true Australia.
