Things to see in Denver

Civic Center Park

The first place most visitors head when exploring the streets of Denver is the Civic Center Park. A green and leafy open space during the warmer months, the park marks the main administrative hub of the city with many of the state’s governing bodies surrounding it.

Smaller than most parks in the city, it packs a punch with spectacular architecture both on the edges and within the boundaries. The highlight is the State Capitol Building to the eastern edge where the classic dome soars above the tree tops. Take a free tour of the building including the dome to marvel at its design.

Insider’s Tip: On the steps of the west side of the Capitol Building are indications of the height above sea-level. At one mile high, the elevation has given the city its nickname, the “Mile High City”.

Denver Botanic Gardens

One of the largest in the country, Denver Botanic Gardens covers 23 acres and contains over 43 individual gardens. With an emphasis on native plants and environmentally responsible practices, the garden has been immortalised in Woody Allen’s film “Sleeper”.

An all-year-round attraction, the gardens are alive in Spring, a shady respite in Summer, offer beautiful Autumn colours, and are a magical wonderland in the Winter.

Things to Do in Denver

Coors Field

Bringing together two of Denver’s great pastimes, the home of the state’s baseball team, the Colorado Rockies, is sponsored by the city’s biggest brewery, Coors. Famous for its association with different American sports, Coors is notable for its adverts during the Superbowl half-time show.

Grab a hotdog, listen to the organ play, and join in on the singing and chanting as the batters swing for home-runs in this great American tradition!

Insider’s Tip: Baseball season begins in April and runs through the Summer months to September, with the playoffs to the World Series running after the regular season.

United States Mint

As one of only two cities in the United States to still have a mint for currency in circulation, the Denver Mint is a unique experience for all ages. With a free tour where you can learn and see the processes involved in making the coins used in the USA today, the tour also highlights currencies of the past and the methods previously used.

Larimer Square

The historic heart of the city, Larimer Square was the site of the original pioneer camp during the gold rush days of the 1850’s. Now repurposed with world class restaurants and boutique stores, the area is a busy hive of street performers and festivals.

Denver’s Nearby Cities

At less than 2 hours drive from Denver, the ski resorts of Breckenridge and Vail get a lot of traffic during the winter months. Aspen can be driven to in around 4 hours, or take a short flight to this world renowned resort.
A significant distance from Denver but feeling a world away, Sante Fe in Arizona to the south is a bohemian and highly art influenced town. With indigenous pueblo style architecture, it has a stark contrast to the mountain cities and town closer to Denver.
Although primarily used as an entrance point to the local ski resorts, Denver is also a fantastic starting or ending point for a self-drive US adventure. Head to the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas or Phoenix before winding through Monument Valley to Denver, or cross the Rockies in all their dramatic glory from Denver to Salt Lake City.
