Things to See in Detroit

Ford Motor Company
The birthplace of the automotive industry that gave Detroit its nickname when the first Model T came off the production line, the company still has a strong connection to the city today. The area of Dearborn to the west of Downtown houses the Henry Ford Museum which is a sprawling indoor and outdoor complex containing exhibits from the very early days of the industry and the advancements since. The outdoor area known as Greenfield Village showcases over 100 historic buildings from the 18th & 19th century including the house in which Henry Ford was born, Thomas Edison’s laboratory, and the Wright brothers’ bicycle factory.
Near the site is the Automotive Hall of Fame and an opportunity to take a tour of the Ford Rouge Factory to watch the assembly line in action where some of the most recognised vehicles in history have been built… the Mustang, Thunderbird, and F-150!
Motown Museum
Cars weren’t the only thing to come out of Detroit, and the Motown Museum celebrates the birth of a new genre of music that went on to captivate the world. With artists such as Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, The Jackson 5, and Aretha Franklin making the music famous, Hitsville USA is where it all began.
Between 1957 and 1972, this small studio was the home of Motown Records and pays homage to the founder, Berry Gordy Jnr., as well as showcasing the story of the genre and its artists.
Things to Do in Detroit

Comerica Park & Ford Field
Americans love their sport, and Detroit is no exception. Comerica Park, home to the city’s baseball team the Detroit Tigers, and Ford Field, home to their NFL team the Detroit Lions, are located next to each other in the centre of the Downtown district.
Both stadiums offer visitors tours of the field and club areas, but Comerica Park also offers a behind-the-scenes look specific to Tigers fans. The complex also houses a Ferris wheel, carousel, and a museum of baseball history.
Insider’s Tip: Although tours of the stadiums are available on both game days and non-game days, game days are booked well in advance and can often be hard to navigate due to crowds.
Belle Isle
Located in the centre of the Detroit River, Belle Isle offers a respite from the surrounding city and is a good place to unwind in this busy business metropolis. With the river marking the border between the USA and Canada, it almost seems that you stand in a peaceful green no man’s land.
At only 3 miles long and 1 mile wide, the parkland is the highlight with great shady trees sheltering hiking trails and sporting facilities.
Insider’s Tip: No matter the season, the Belle Isle Aquarium and the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory are worth a visit as they are housed in a grand building that is postcard perfect!
