Things to See in Langkawi

The SkyBridge

Take a view of the island from the longest curve suspension bridge in the world, the SkyBridge! Located at the top of Machinchang Mountain and floating about 100 metres above the ground, the bridge provides a unique perspective of the rainforest canopy and spectacular views out over the island to the azure waters surrounding it.

Reached by cable car and a short walk from the top station, the bridge offers visitors ever-changing views along the 125 metre length, including straight down through the glass floor at intervals along the span.

Dataran Helang

In the southwestern corner of the island, the town of Kuah houses a spectacular sculpture of the island’s namesake. The 12 metre tall statue of an eagle taking flight sits at the end of the Kuah Jetty surrounded by plazas and fountains on the landward side, and the Straits of Malacca on the seaward.

It has become the emblem of the island and according to local folklore, the reddish-brown eagle portrayed was constructed as a homage to the island’s name – helang meaning eagle, and kawi meaning reddish-brown… hence Langkawi.

Insider’s Tip: As there is little to no shade at the statue and surrounding jetty, a visit in the morning or evening will mean escaping the intense sun.

Things to Do in Langkawi

Jet Ski Tour

Although the island holds many wonders, the true draw on holidays to Langkawi is the water! One of the best ways to experience what is on offer, as well as manage to see some of its more remote and beautiful locations, is to join a jet ski tour.

Lasting around 4 hours, and with all safety equipment and instruction included, your guide then takes you to showcase some of the surrounding islets with their pristine beaches, clear waters, hidden freshwater lakes, and amazing rock formations. Firm favourites on the itinerary and a must for all visitors are Pulau Dayang Bunting and Pulau Beras Basah.

Insider’s Tip: Make sure not to leave anything open or accessible on Pulau Beras Basah’s beach as the local monkeys have a habit of thievery… and they’re very good at it!

Pulau Payar Marine Park

A short boat ride from the main island, Pulau Payar Marine Park is around 45 minutes from the Kuah Jetty and features some of the best underwater sights in the area. With colourful coral reefs filled with abundant marine life, it is considered one of the best diving and snorkelling reefs on peninsular Malaysia’s west coast.

With floating pontoons situated above the reef, even those with limited water skills can sit on the pontoon and observe the ecosystem below the waves, making this the perfect place for coral viewing for the whole family.

Insider’s Tip: Be aware that you need permission to swim and snorkel within the marine park. This can be done by joining an organised tour which includes the equipment or by obtaining permission from the local authorities on the island.

Langkawi’s Nearby Cities

Getting to Langkawi is often achieved by connecting through Kuala Lumpur or Singapore, with short flights to Langkawi of 1 hour or 1 ½ hours respectively. This proximity makes having a multi-centre itinerary perfect for those looking to experience both tropical beaches and a city break in one trip.
