Things to see in Muscat

Historic Forts

The Old City of Muscat is surprisingly small and located away from the rest of the newly built-up areas. It continues to hold its charm with fantastic architecture throughout, and you may just find a few surprises.

Along with the Al Alam Palace, the ceremonial palace of the Sultan, and several museums, the harbour is hemmed in on both sides by 16th century forts perched high on rocky outcrops. Built by the Portuguese the forts are unfortunately closed to the public, but there is something enchanting about looking up and seeing the monolithic structures surrounding the port.

The main road between the Old and New Cities also passes through Mutrah, where the city’s main trading port area has been located for centuries, making the area full of traditional attractions such as the Mutrah Fort overlooking the bay.

Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque

Completed in 2001 and having a capacity of over 20,000 worshippers, the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is a jewel located just outside the new area of Muscat. Set in beautifully landscaped gardens and containing stunning interiors, it is also home to the second largest Persian carpet in the world!

Insider’s Tip: Visitors can only enter between 9 and 11 in the morning but can access the grounds at any time. Please note that respectful clothing is required and that children under 10 are not permitted inside.

Things to Do in Muscat

Bimmah Sinkhole

Take a drive down the coast towards Sur and you will come across a natural phenomenon that the Omani people have made into a fantastic way to escape the desert heat. In fact, the Bimmah Sinkhole has become so popular that the local government created the Hawiyat Najm Park around it and stairs leading down to the bottom.

Being so close to the sea, the clear blue-green waters at the base are a haven for those looking for a refreshing dip, as well as the adventurous who make the plunge over 80 feet from the rocks!

Mutrah Souq

Like souqs throughout the Middle East and Northern Africa, the Mutrah Souq is a bustling maze of winding streets filled with exotic aromas and fantastic intricacies. Located between the Old and New Cities, the proximity to the port meant that delicacies from all over the world have been sold here for centuries.

Inside the close quarters of the souq, light barely reaches through the stalls and it can be very easy to get turned around… but don’t worry, that’s half the fun! Keep heading downhill and you’ll reach the Corniche, a seaside walkway stretching the length of the bay and your escape from the claustrophobic surrounds.

Take a Day Trip

With such dramatic scenery surrounding the city, take a day trip into the mountains and deserts and experience the true Omani countryside. The city of Nizwa is a good place to start, with an impressive fort and souq, and you can make a day out of it by also visiting the nearby Bahla Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
