Things to see in Ottawa

Rideau Canal

A canal built off the Rideau River through the downtown area of Ottawa creates a lovely scenic pathway through the capital city. Built between 1826 and 1832 as a military defence, today the surrounding green spaces are used as a recreational area during the summer for boating, and, when frozen over in the winter, for ice skating.

Stretching a total of 125 miles the waterway connects Ottawa to Kingston on Lake Ontario to the southwest. Recognised for its historical significance by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, visitors to Ottawa can view many of the city’s remarkable sights from along the banks.

Insider’s Tip: Visit the Fairmont Chateau Laurier, a stunning historic hotel near the canal entrance, and take a cruise up Rideau Canal to Dow’s Lake lasting around 90 minutes. A fantastic way to see Ottawa’s main attractions!

Parliament Hill

Perched on the edge of the Ottawa River, Parliament Hill is a complex of buildings utilised as Canada’s federal legislature. Neo-Gothic in design, they remain open to the public for guided tours of the interior and the lush grounds that surround it.

During the summer months, daily performances of Changing of the Guard are the best chance for visitors to see the Canadian Mounted Police, complete with Mountie uniforms!

Days can easily be spent in the surrounding area, with the National Gallery of Canada, Royal Canadian Mint, Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica, the Bytown Museum, the National Arts Centre, Supreme Court of Canada, and the Canadian War Museum all within walking distance.

Things to Do in Ottawa

Canada Aviation and Space Museum

For enthusiasts and people with a general interest in planes, the aerospace industry, and Canada’s place in the history of air travel, the Canada Aviation and Space Museum is a fascinating look at aircraft throughout the ages. Located in an expansive compound, the museum displays a large collection of both military and civilian aircraft, as well as Canada’s contribution to the International Space Station.

Ranging from a replica of the Silver Dart, which in 1909 made the first flight in Canada, through fighter planes from the First and Second World Wars and the Cold War, to aircraft that helped open up the uncharted northern provinces, the museum also offers visitors hands-on exhibits to interact with in their explorations.

ByWard Market

The historical ByWard Market located to the north of the canal is a fantastic neighbourhood to wander on foot. With unique shops, boutiques, and restaurants that cater to everyone, the focal point is the thriving outdoor market displaying fresh flowers, fruit and vegetables, and local gourmet artisan products.

One of the oldest and largest public markets in the country, the market area has existed since 1846 and has been lovingly restored. It is also the perfect place to try local favourites like poutine, chips topped with cheese curds, and gravy.
