Powell’s City of Books

Holidays to Portland can often be a little wet, so get lost on a rainy day amongst over a million books in one of the largest independent bookstores in the world! Powell’s City of Books flagship store covers a square city block and rises three stories high, proving the digital age hasn’t killed off the love of immersing yourself in a fantasy world.

With shelf upon shelf and row upon row lined up in front of you to get lost in, you may just discover a new favourite author, a vintage cookbook, or even the perfect gift for those back at home. Keep an eye out for regular events and signings while you are in town too!

Lan Su Chinese Garden

Seen as the most authentic Chinese garden outside of China, the Lan Su Garden is a walled oasis in the heart of the city. Built by artisans from Portland’s sister city, Suzhou, the gardens cover an entire city block with pavilions joined by winding pathways that meander around small ponds.

The name translates to ”Garden of the Awakening Orchids” and incorporates culture, history, and the opportunity for authentic Chinese tea in the stunning teahouse surrounded by tranquillity.

Things to Do in Portland

Washington Park

Covering 410 acres to the west of Portland, Washington Park is home to some of the most notable landscapes of the city. Including the Portland Japanese Garden, International Rose Test Garden, and Hoyt Arboretum, the park also offers fantastic views over the city skyline and out to Mt Hood in the distance.

Washington Park is also home to a number of family-friendly activities such as the Oregon Zoo, the Portland Children’s Museum, and the World Forestry Centre Discovery Museum, making it easy to fill a day out with many different attractions.

Insider’s Tip: Just to the north of the park lies Pittock Mansion, a stately historic home with 22 rooms that is now open to the public, that gives insights into the high life of Portland residents at the turn of the 20th Century.

Food Trucks or Microbreweries

In recent years Portland has undergone a renaissance of sorts, focused primarily around its food and beverage scenes. Food trucks have become staple fare where many can be found clumped together on street corners throughout the city. With true multicultural cuisine offered ranging from Korean and Thai street food, Czech specialties, Mexican delights, and Canada’s famous poutine, there is a push for quality dishes with amazing flavours where everyone can enjoy at least one thing.

The beverage scene is also blooming with specialty coffee roasters, distillers, and microbreweries located across the city. The Oregon Brewers Guild lists 70 individual breweries alone in Portland (105 in the Portland Metro Area) so visitors are more than spoilt for choice.

Tom McCall Waterfront Park

Stretching along the banks of the Willamette River in Downtown Portland, Tom McCall Waterfront Park provides some of the best views of the city skyline while also hosting some of the most popular events of the city such as the Oregon Brewers Festival and Cinco de Mayo.

Located at the north end near Burnside Bridge is the Portland Saturday Market, the largest continuously operated outdoor market in the country, filled with arts & crafts as well as food carts and entertainment. Further to the south, past the Oregon Maritime Museum, lies the world’s smallest park, Mill Ends Park, standing at just two feet across.
