Things to See in San Jose

Mercado Centrale
A must on holidays to San Jose, there is truly no better way to immerse yourself in the daily life of locals than to visit the largest market in the city, Mercado Centrale. Located in the heart of the city on Avenue Central, this bright yellow building is filled with local delicacies to try (the coffee and the cigars are definitely worth a look!) as well as a fantastic place to pick up souvenirs.
Insider’s Tip: Being a local market, a fair understanding of Spanish will help get you the best deals!
Teatro Nacional
With striking architecture and stunning interior decorations, the National Theatre of Costa Rica is a source of great national pride to the population. Built in the late 19th Century, the rooms are filled with marble statues, frescos, paintings, and gilding.
Still used to this day for a variety of performances, the theatre can be explored on your own, but the hourly guided tour provides insights that would otherwise be missed and is well worth the time.
Things to Do in San Jose

Museum Hopping
San Jose showcases a huge range of museums that will be of particular interest to those looking for local art and history. The Museo del Oro Precolombino exhibits over 1,600 artifacts dating from 500 A.D., all in gold. The entrance fee also includes access to the National Coin Museum showing coinage from as far back as 1236.
The Jade Museum, located further east along Avenue Central, focuses on this green stone and contains the largest display of American jade in the world, over 7,000 pieces!
Insider’s Tip: There are many other museums and galleries worth visiting for different interests including the Museo de Los Ninos (Children’s Museum) and National Museum, both housed in historic buildings.
La Paz Waterfall Gardens
One of the most popular day trips from San Jose, the La Paz Waterfall Gardens to the north of the city offers visitors a window into the surrounding rainforests. With a series of 5 waterfalls hidden amongst the lush vegetation, the area is also a series of safe hiking trails, an aviary, a butterfly observatory, and exhibits on serpents, monkeys, jungle cats, and amphibians.
This ecological attraction gives back to the community with environmental education programs and 95% of its employees come from the surrounding towns that previously survived on ranching and agriculture, making the reforestation all the more important.
Other Tours from San Jose
A country famous for its coffee, a day trip from San Jose to a coffee plantation will offer visitors the chance to experience every step of the coffee making process. Doka Coffee Plantation lies on 4,000 acres and highlights the importance of this industry to the population.
The day trip to Doka or to the La Paz Waterfalls can also be paired with a visit to Volcan Paos, an inactive volcano with a lake in the caldera. Due to its mineral properties, the water is a beautiful blue that could be straight from a painting!
A flight from San Jose to the northeast corner of Costa Rica has you in one of the country’s best marine life areas in the world. The Tortuguero National Park is famous for its green sea turtle nesting grounds, and although remote, is the third most visited national park in Costa Rica.
